A famous establishment if ever there was one, the Hospices de Beaune in Burgundy has the unique distinction of fulfilling a triple purpose: medical, tourism and viticulture. This originality is explained by the site's history. In the 15th century, the founders built a hospital, the Hôtel-Dieu, in the traditional Burgundian architectural style. A vineyard was also added, producing wines that are now known the world over. No longer used as a hospital, the building has been converted into a museum and is now a major tourist attraction.

The wines produced by this prestigious estate are sold every year at the Hospices de Beaune auction, an internationally renowned charity event. Ludivine Griveau, the estate manager, coordinates the running of the estate, working closely with the winegrowers under contract. She works to preserve the winegrowing heritage and maintain the excellence of Hospices de Beaune wines.

Geographical location

The Domaine viticole des Hospices de Beaune covers 60 hectares. Its Grands Crus and Premiers Crus come mainly from Beaune and the surrounding area: Meursault, Monthelie, Auxey-Duresses, Puligny-Montrachet, Savigny-les-Beaune, Pommard, Volnay and Pernand-Vergelesses. The Hospices de Beaune also produce wines in the Côte de Nuit and in the Mâconnais region, in Pouilly-Fuissé. Pinot Noir represents 50 hectares of vines for the production of red wines. White wine comes from around ten hectares planted with Chardonnay.

The wines

The grapes are harvested by hand, and undergo a vinification process adapted to each vintage. Destemming is carried out only when necessary. The cuvées are meticulously blended from different climates, giving the Domaine's wines their distinctive character.
