The magnificent Cantenac building bears the name of its founder, a Frenchman of Scottish origin, who built it in 1806. In 1724, the Irishman Jacques Boyd settled in Cantenac and created a large wine estate. Divided and sold, Boyd's grandson John Lewis Brown acquired part of the land and, in 1806, built the château that would bear his name: Château Cantenac Brown.

A Frenchman of Scottish origin, John Lewis Brown paid tribute to his origins by building the château in the medieval architectural style of Tudor-era Great Britain. A painter of animals, John Lewis Brown made the château a place of artistic expression, home to the avant-garde of Impressionism.

From the hands of the Gromard family in 1843 to those of the Le Lous family, owners since 2019, John Lewis Brown's masterpiece has had several purchasers, all of whom have preserved the singularity of the château's original construction.

Under the current management of Tristan Le Lous, with the help of José Sanfins (General Manager and Winemaker), Château Cantenac Brown continues to serve wine enthusiasts the world over.

Location of Château Cantenac Brown

A majestic Tudor-style structure, Château Cantenac Brown is located in the Médoc region of Gironde, and was classified as the third Grand Cru in the official Bordeaux wine classification of 1855 in the Margaux appellation. Covering an area of 60.5 hectares, Château Cantenac Brown is a wine estate in the Bordeaux vineyards.

Having grown up in the vineyards of Bordeaux, José Sanfins strives to convey the love of the terroir he grew up with in every bottle of Château Cantenac Brown. In 2020, the members of the Château have decided to launch the construction of an all-raw-earth winery, in order to preserve the environment, which is becoming more fragile by the day; this was Philippe Madec's idea.

The vines are planted on gravelly soil with grape varieties found on the left bank of the Bordeaux vineyards, in the heart of the Médoc. The grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Cabernet Franc (30%) and Merlot (5%).
