Gianni Brunelli hails from Montalcino, Italy. After becoming a restaurateur in Siena, he bought the "Chiuse di Sotto" in 1987. This property, located in the Montalcino region, had belonged to his father. He retains and cultivates a two-hectare parcel of vines, planted by his father in 1947. In the mid-1990s, he bought the Podernovone estate, north of Montalcino. Since Gianni's death in 2008, his wife Laura Brunelli has taken over the estate. She is assisted by Italian oenologist Paolo Vigaggini.

Location of the Gianni Brunelli estate

The Gianni Brunelli estate is made up of five different parcels located in the Montalcino region of Tuscany. The first parcel lies to the northeast of Montalcino, at an altitude of 200 meters. The soils are clayey. The vines face north to south for maximum exposure. The other parcels of the Gianni Brunelli estate are located to the southeast of Montalcino. They cover 4.5 hectares of limestone, marl and schist soils. These different locations and exposures make the estate unique. Four hectares are dedicated to Brunello di Montalcino, the rest to Rosso di Montalcino.
