BELARGUS

Domaine Belargus is located in the heart of Anjou Noir, in the Loire Valley. Led by Ivan Massonnat, the estate aims to reveal the different expressions of Chenin Blanc through a plot-by-plot approach to the vineyards of Anjou. Its identity is rooted in the geological diversity of the region and in viticulture guided by the principles of biodynamics.

Anjou Noir, a mosaic of terroirs

The vineyards of Domaine Belargus are spread across three main areas: Savennières, the Quarts-de-Chaume sector and the slopes bordering the Layon.

This location exposes the estate to a remarkable diversity of soils, slopes and aspects. Anjou Noir is notably characterised by schist soils originating from the Armorican Massif. Depending on the area, purple schist, magmatic rocks, rounded pebbles, clay and plateaus of wind-blown sand can also be found.

This geological diversity lies at the heart of Belargus’ philosophy: to consider each terroir individually rather than seeking a uniform expression of Anjou white wine. The estate’s plot-by-plot approach is inspired by the interpretation of Burgundy’s climats.

Chenin Blanc as the common thread

Chenin Blanc from Anjou is the sole grape variety grown across the estate’s vineyards. Through this variety, Belargus seeks to express the differences between the micro-terroirs that make up its vineyard heritage.

The characteristics of each slope, the nature of its subsoil, its exposure and its gradient all contribute to the identity of the wines. In Savennières, the estate notably works with schist terroirs. Around Quarts-de-Chaume, the geology combines different types of schist and rock formations. Further south, the slopes of the Layon reveal another facet of Anjou Noir.

The estate mainly produces dry white wines and also makes sweet wines in vintages when conditions are suitable. This diversity illustrates the wide range of expressions that Belargus seeks to reveal from a single grape variety.

Biodynamic viticulture

Biodynamics at Domaine Belargus supports this desire to express the identity of each site. The estate works within an environment where the vines coexist with diverse flora and fauna, with particular attention paid to the natural balance of the slopes.

This connection with nature is also reflected in Belargus’ visual identity. Its emblem is the Adonis blue, Polyommatus bellargus, a butterfly historically found on one of the estate’s emblematic slopes.

A contemporary interpretation of Anjou wines

Through Domaine Belargus, Ivan Massonnat promotes a vision of Anjou wine centred on Chenin Blanc and the identity of each terroir. Savennières, Quarts-de-Chaume and the slopes of the Layon together create a panorama of Anjou Noir, where soils, exposures and landscapes give rise to different expressions.

Combining biodynamic viticulture, a plot-by-plot approach and a strong connection to the terroirs of the Loire Valley, Belargus places Chenin Blanc at the heart of its project.
