Klein Constantia Estate is one of the oldest vineyards in Cape Town, South Africa, dating back to 1685. After its heyday in the 19th century, the Klein Constantia Estate returned to the world stage in the 1980s. Its production is mainly composed of white wines, including the famous Vin de Constance.

Geographical location of Domaine Klein Constantia

The Klein Constantia Estate is located in the heart of the Constantia Valley, south of Cape Town. This vineyard in the southwest of South Africa is only 10 kilometers from the ocean. The surface of the vineyard of the domain is 146 hectares. Its main grape varieties are Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat de Frontignan, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The wines of Domaine Klein Constantia

The flagship wine of Domaine Klein Constantia is the Vin de Constance. It is a sweet white wine, made exclusively from Muscat. Its characteristic bottle, with a capacity of 500 mL, evokes the shape of old bottles. Very famous in the 19th century, this wine is considered today as one of the greatest sweet wines in the world.

The vinification of Vin de Constance is particularly complex. The grape harvest, by hand, is spread out over two months to obtain batches with distinct characteristics. The cold maceration can last up to two weeks. Fermentation in barrels lasts between six months and one year. The Vin de Constance is aged on its lees for at least three years. The final blend takes advantage of the characteristics of the different batches.

The production of Domaine Klein Constantia is not limited to Constance wine. In white wine, the estate produces a Sauvignon Blanc, a Chardonnay and a Riesling, among others. In red wine, it offers a Red Blend, based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
