One ofSpain's leading producers, Domaine Lopez de Heredia was born around 1877, when Don Rafael Lopez de Heredia y Lendeta decided to follow in the footsteps of his French acquaintances and build what is now La Cave, Haro's oldest winery. Don Rafael was particularly fond of the area around Haro, the capital of Rioja Alta; an ideal vineyard for wine production. For over 100 years, the family has personally tended the vineyards, giving them a thorough understanding of the art of grape-growing and wine-making: the grapes are harvested by hand, using a knife with a blade called a "serpette" to prevent the grapes from breaking, and then placed in wooden containers made in the family's cooperage workshop. The wines are aged in Bordeaux oak barrels.

Location of the estate

Located in Spain's Rioja region, Domaine López de Heredia boasts four distinct vineyards. In 1913, Don Rafael founded Viña Tondonia, a 100-hectare shell-shaped vineyard rooted in alluvial and limestone soils near the River Ebro. The estate covers three other vineyards: Viña Cubillo, Viña Bosconia and Viña Gravonia, located in the upper Rioja region. In all, 170 hectares of vines cultivated and nurtured to offer the purest wines of the region and the singular expression of grape varieties such as Tempranillo, Mazuelo and Graciano.

Estate wines

Domaine wines are divided according to their vineyard of origin. In red, Vina Bosconia Reserva comes from the El Bosque vineyard, where the Tempranillo grape expresses all its freshness! Viña Cubillo is rooted in 40-year-old vines. ViñaGravonia white wines are fresh and fruity. Viña Tondonia "Gran Reserva" is a special range in which only a few vintages are selected from specific plots. A very small number of bottles, and 7 years of ageing followed by clarification with egg whites. The bottles are sealed with wax to prevent any contact with the outside world. A further ten years in the Domaine's cellars will be needed before these precious nectars see the light of day. Garnacho, Tempranillo and Viura are blended to produce great, singular wines that have received special attention. All these wines offer great finesse on the palate. They are marked by their long maturation in oak barrels in the bodega's cellars.
