In the Bordeaux wine region, Château Calon-Ségur's winegrowing history began in the 12th century with Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, President of the Bordeaux Parliament. Nicknamed "Prince of Vines" by Louis XV, he said of this Saint-Estèphe vineyard: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon". The heart affixed to Château Calon-Ségur bottles bears witness to this. Ranked third in the 1855 Médoc wine classification, Château Calon-Ségur passed into the hands of the Capbern-Gasqueton family in 1894. Owners of the famous Château Capbern-Gasqueton vines, the family ran the château for over a century. In 2012, Château Calon-Ségur was acquired by the Suravenir insurance group.

Location of Château Calon-Ségur

Anchored at the gateway to Saint-Estèphe, Château Calon-Ségur stretches along the Gironde estuary north of Bordeaux. Located in the northern part of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the property covers 94 hectares, including 55 hectares of planted vines. Typical of the Médoc, the property's terroir is composed of a layer of gravel on a clay base. The single-cluster vineyard is planted with 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The average age of Château Calon-Ségur vines ranges from 22 to 40 years.

The wines of Château Calon-Ségur

At Château Calon-Ségur, the grapes are harvested by hand. Vinification is traditional. The red wine is aged in oak barrels for 18 to 20 months. The result is an aromatic, powerful, woody Saint-Estèphe with notes of black fruits and spices. The château also produces a second red wine: Marquis de Calon-Ségur, with velvety notes. The third wine, fresh and fruity, is made from young vines. It is called Saint-Estèphe de Calon-Ségur.
