In the 16th century, Joseph Stanislas Gruaud created a winegrowing estate. When he died, Joseph-Sébastien Larose was his sole heir. He acquired the estate, which became Château Gruaud Larose. In 1997, the Merlaut family bought Château Gruaud Larose. It produces a red Bordeaux wine, Second Grand Cru Classé de Saint-Julien. The Saint-Julien appellation is a historic Grand Cru of the Médoc. Harvesting is done by hand, with the best grapes selected. Since 2009, it has been possible to take part in the tasting of this exceptional Bordeaux wine.

Location of Château Gruaud Larose

The Château Gruaud Larose estate is located in Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, Gironde, south of Pauillac. The Gruaud Larose vineyards benefit from the ideal microclimate of the Médoc. The Gruaud Larose appellation is located on soil covered with humus, clay, sand and pebbles. The subsoil is composed of gravel. Château Gruaud Larose is close to the Gironde estuary. The vines are thus protected from the rain. The vineyard covers 80 hectares. The grape varieties are 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and a touch of Petit Verdot.

Château Gruaud Larose wines

The estate offers two red wines. Château Gruaud Larose, Second Grand Cru Classé, is a powerful, well-structured wine with notes of red fruit. Renowned oenologist Éric Boissenot ensures that Château Gruaud Larose is one of Bordeaux's finest red wines. This is a wine for laying down, to be cellared for several years. The estate's second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose, is made with the same expertise as the Grand Cru. Tasting this second wine offers fruity and spicy notes.
