The Château Musar estate was founded in Lebanon in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, then aged twenty. After studying oenology in Bordeaux, Serge Hochar took over from his father at the estate in 1959. For over 18 years, he worked to improve the quality of the Lebanese estate's wines. Vintage after vintage, the quality of Château Musar's production was maintained despite Lebanon's civil war. Serge Hochar passed away in 2014. His two sons, Gaston and Marc, have now succeeded their father at the head of the estate. They are assisted by their uncle Ronald.

Location of the Château Musar estate

The Château Musar vineyards are located in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. Temperatures, with cold winters and hot summers, and sunshine, are ideal for growing grapes. The estate's vineyards are located between 1,000 and 1,500 meters above sea level, on limestone, gravel and stony soils. The grape varieties reserved for white wines are grown on the western slopes of Mount Lebanon. They are also found at the foot of the Anti-Lebanon mountain range in the east of the country. At an altitude of 1,200 meters, they benefit from cooler conditions. The Château Musar winery and technical facilities are located in Ghazir.

Château Musar wines

Château Musar produces red, white and rosé wines. The vines are harvested when ripe. The grapes are fermented in cement vats, then transferred to French oak barrels, before being bottled. Some vintages wait up to seven years before release. The estate uses very little sulfur and does not filter the wine. The red wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. The Lebanese varieties Obeïdi and Merwah provide a white wine with a pronounced local identity.
